Open-Mindedness

Open-mindedness is a key ingredient for success in treatment. By being open-minded, you are more likely to be willing to try new things, to learn new information, and to make changes in your life.

There are a number of things you can do to be more open-minded in treatment:

  • Be willing to listen to your therapist. Your therapist is there to help you. They have a wealth of knowledge and experience that they can share with you. Be willing to listen to what they have to say and to consider their suggestions.
  • Be willing to try new things. Treatment may involve trying new things, such as new medications, new coping strategies, or new ways of thinking about yourself and your life. Be willing to try new things even if they seem uncomfortable or unfamiliar.
  • Be willing to learn new information. Treatment may involve learning new information about yourself, about your condition, and about how to manage your condition. Be willing to learn new information and to use it to make changes in your life.
  • Be willing to make changes in your life. Treatment may involve making changes in your lifestyle, in your relationships, or in your way of thinking about yourself. Be willing to make changes in your life even if they are difficult or challenging.

Open-mindedness is an important ingredient for success in treatment. By being open-minded, you can increase your chances of getting the help you need and of making the changes you want in your life.
